Digging E.T. Out of the New Mexico Desert

As I’m sure you’ve seen throughout your social network feeds, Microsoft funded an excavation in the middle of Alamagordo, New Mexico to prove or disprove a long-standing rumor that Atari once buried its remaining stock of E.T. game cartridges in a landfill over thirty years ago. The video game, often cited as one of the worst produced video games in history was left with unsold stock and, as Atari began having financial problems, it was rumored they banished unsold product out to the middle of New Mexico to be forgotten by time.

I’ve seen one news outlet calling it “a silly waste of money,” but the dig was part of a soon-to-come documentary called “Atari: Game Over” being produced by Microsoft’s new Xbox Entertainment Studios, which will document the rise and fall of the legendary video game company.

The documentary is being directed by Zak Penn (writer of X2, and other large-scale films) and was also observed by Ernie Cline. Our avid Ghosthead readers might recognize the name Ernie Cline as a long-standing member of the Ghostbusters fan community as well as the author of the book “Ready Player One.”

Details of the dig are still to be revealed, such as how many copies of the game were unearthed, the condition of the games (judging by the pictures released the carts appear to be largely undamaged after being buried for 30 years), and where the games will be going once they’re uncovered. I would expect all those to be answered in the documentary once it’s released via Xbox.

PS4 Owners: Get Ready For Another Update

It became a running joke between a good friend and I that each and every time we switched on our PS3s a software update was required. Not to be outdone, the PS4 is getting ready to push out another big firmware update according to IGN.com

The video game site suggests that the largest part of this update will be SHAREfactory - you know, another way for you to share your gameplay to the .0001 people that actually spend their days watching the clips and live streaming of you playing games. Honestly, the next-gen consoles have been absolutely incredible but their focus on "sharing" your gameplay is puzzling. Is there actually an audience out there watching other people play?

The update will also allow gamers to pre-download and install a game before its release date, assuring that you can play the exact moment that a game is "released."

Titanfall Multiplayer Update

Respawn and EA have released an update today for Titanfall on PC and Xbox One that evens out the playing field for the online multiplayer experience. A new algorithm was developed to pit players against more evenly matched opponents to avoid more onesided matches (much like the match I endured not too long ago against a bunch of G4s who just wiped the floor with our team over and over and over). Point values in several of the modes, including the lowering of points awarded for defending in Hardpoint have also been implemented, for better or for worse. I for one was proud of the points I earned holding down the fort in Hardpoint for as long as humanly possible, but alas incremental awarding of 100 points has been lowered to 75.
